Community Engagement

Service at King’s

‘Service’ is the term that King’s College London adopted in our Strategic Vision 2029 to describe the university’s commitment to serving society both through and beyond the traditional roles of education and research. We define Service as a mutually beneficial experience between King’s (its students, staff or alumni) and the community or environment (local, national or global) in which we operate.

Service should measurably and positively change an outcome in the present or the future, through a planned intervention. As King’s delivers on its Service agenda, it is our hope that we can reinvigorate and redefine the public purpose of universities, both in the UK and abroad. Overall, we want to make the world a better place, above and beyond what is expected or required of a university.

We aim to achieve this through:

Social Reform: we recognise that we have a responsibility to shape and transform local communities and societies across the world.

Educational Experience: King’s graduates are distinguished not only by their knowledge but by their wisdom, character, service ethic and global mindset.

Research Impact: our world-leading and outward-looking research is focused on meeting societal need.

Volunteering: we support and facilitate students, staff and alumni participating in voluntary activities across numerous sectors.

Environmental Sustainability: we have made a commitment to protect the environment, whether it be in relation to energy saving, recycling or sustainable transport.

King’s and Cornwall – A National Partnership

King’s recognises that it has an important role to play nationally in order to serve communities beyond London and have an even greater impact in the UK. As King’s Service Centre is based in Cornwall, we are exploring ways that we can develop partnerships in this area to meet the needs of local communities and develop mutually beneficial initiatives.
