Meet Rhys & Austin

King’s Service Centre aims to bring fantastic job opportunities to Cornwall at all levels, from Apprentices all the way to Senior Management. Working closely with Cornwall College, we provide a wide range of high quality vocational training through our Apprenticeships including Business Administration, Digital Media and IT.

Rhys Morgan and Austin Bargery are two recent IT Apprentices who have now completed their courses and transitioned to permanent members of our team. We managed to pin them down and gain some insight into their time on the Apprenticeship scheme…

Rhys Morgan – Service Desk Analyst

Before applying for the Apprenticeship I was studying at Truro College and really wanted to find a way to stay in Cornwall, but I didn’t think there was any IT opportunities in the county. I had found the Service Desk Analyst Apprentice role through Cornwall College and applied right away. Within the first few weeks of joining I felt very well supported by other members of the team and through their training I was up and running very quickly. What was great about the Apprenticeship was that I was given the same responsibility (with help always on hand if I needed it!), training and opportunities as my colleagues. I always felt like an equal and would definitely recommend the scheme to anyone considering it.  Being treated the same really gave me the chance to grow and develop at a pace that was sustainable.

Professionally the Apprenticeship has been fantastic. Already I’ve gained my ITIL Foundation Certificate, which is an entry level qualification in the key elements, concepts and terminology of IT Service Management. I’m looking forward to my future with King’s Service Centre, the further professional training available and, as we support the services of King’s College London, there are always exciting and challenging opportunities to progress with my career within the Service Centre.

Austin Bargery – Service Desk Analyst

Following my A-Levels at Newquay Tretherras I visited the Cornwall College Apprenticeship evening to have a look at what options were available to me and I found the King’s Service Centre Apprenticeship. The Apprenticeship caught my attention as I was eager to stay in Cornwall. Upon joining I found that all the members of the team were really helpful and supportive of me. In terms of what I have learnt, whilst we predominantly deal with Microsoft devices, my knowledge of Apple devices has expanded as well as my knowledge of the wider systems that are used by King’s College London IT. My lecturers whilst at College were also really good, which I believe is key to a successful Apprenticeship as I was getting the hands on practice from the Service Centre and then the theory from College.

Throughout my time as an Apprentice I was encouraged to take responsibility, take part in training and really felt part of the team. I definitely see my future career with King’s IT and the Service Centre. I’d love to focus on a more specific part of IT and there always seem to be new opportunities within the Service Centre, so I’m excited to see how my career progresses! The Apprenticeship opened up this opportunity for me and I’m so glad I applied.

If you are between the ages of 16 – 24, considering an Apprenticeship, and the prospect of supporting a global top 20 university appeals to you then get in touch with either us or Cornwall College. We would love to welcome you on-board as we expand our Apprenticeship scheme.
